Green Cards (also known as "Immigrant Visas" or "Lawful Permanent Resident Status")

Someone who wishes to live in the United States indefinitely may apply to become a green card holder of the United States (also known as a “lawful permanent resident” or “LPR”).  The process of applying for a green card within the United States is known as “adjustment of status.”  Applying for a green card from outside the United States is known as “consular processing.”
