The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has announced that citizens of Malta will be eligible to participate in the Visa Waiver Program effective December 30, 2008.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced that the expiration date for Employment Authorization Documents for Salvadoran TPS beneficiaries has automatically been extended for 6 months, from March 9, 2009 to September 9, 2009.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced an interim final rule to the Federal Register that will allow “T” and “U” nonimmigrants to adjust their status to become lawful permanent residents. The T visa provides immigration relief to victims of severe forms of human trafficking. The U visa provides immigration relief to victims of certain crimes who are willing to assist law enforcement in investigating the criminal activity.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced an extension to the Temporary Protected Status ("TPS") re-registration period for nationals of Nicaragua and Honduras which was previously scheduled to end on December 1, 2008. The re-registration period now runs from October 1, 2008 to December 30, 2008. Employment authorization documents have also been extended an additional 6 months through July 5, 2009.

The Department of Homeland Security announced today that seven countries have officially been added to the Visa Waiver Program, including: the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, the Republic of Korea, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia.

The addition of these countries to the Visa Waiver Program expands the list of countries already participating in the Program, including: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

The Department of Homeland Security announced today that it has signed an Interim Declaration with Romania relating to Romania's possible participation in the Visa Waiver Program.

President Bush anounced today that several additional countries - the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia and South Korea - have met the requirements to join the Visa Waiver Program. Eligible citizens of these countries will be able to enter the U.S. on the Visa Waiver Program in about one month.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced that it will extend the initial period of admission for TN-visa holders from Canada and Mexico from one year to three years. Additionally, it will authorize extensions of stay in increments of up to three years. A copy of the Federal Register notice is available online.

The U.S. Department of State has now posted instructions for participating in the 2010 Diversity Visa Lottery which will take place from October 2, 2008 to December 1, 2008.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced today that it plans to extend Temporary Protected Status ("TPS") for Nicaraguans for an additional 18 months, from January 6, 2009 through July 5, 2010. Further details regarding the re-registration requirements will be published shortly.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced today that it plans to extend Temporary Protected Status ("TPS") for El Salvadorans for an additional 18 months, from March 10, 2009 through September 9, 2010. Further details regarding the re-registration requirements will be published shortly.

The U.S. Department of State announced today that the online application period for the 2010 Diversity Visa Lottery would begin at Noon (Eastern Standard Time) on October 2, 2008 and would continue through Noon (Eastern Standard Time) on December 1, 2008. Check back here for further instructions.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has changed the naturalization testing requirements, and has issued a brochure which describes the new requirements. The new test goes into effect on October 1, 2008. Everyone applying after October 1, 2008 will be required to take the new test. For those who filed prior to October 1, 2008, they may choose to take the former test. A chart is available to assist applicants in determining which test applies. Study materials for the new test are also available, including test materials for the English reading test, English writing test, and civics questions.
